The top of the kontainer is hinged. I designed a fairly complicated hinge where the design was determined mainly by the materials on hand. The one requirement I had, that I feel is a necessity, is that the lid be removable. Remember that you will have to break this kontainer down soon or later. Perhaps it's not a necessity, but rather and option you will use sooner or later. The kontainer, as I have it designed, breaks down into components. Rather than simply putting the kiln in the kontainer, I have it so it is assembled around the kiln after the position of the kiln is decided. You can do it either way, I suppose. If it is assembled more or less permanently, make the kontainer big enough that you can get your hands- and the hands of three or four friends- on the kiln so you can lift it out. No simple task. I screwed four heavy, large handles on to the side of my kiln for just such a situation.

My hinge is a piano hinge that snaps into a length of "s-cleat." S-cleat is a strip of folded metal in the shape of a flattened S. Two pieces of flat sheet are joined by slipping one piece in each open side of the S. You can buy it at Home Depot. Here is a picture of the end of a piece of s-cleat.

I devised a way to attach a length of s-cleat to the side of the kontainer where half of a piano hinge will snap into it. The other side of the hinge is attached to the lid. I made it more complicated than it need be. A couple of regular 2x2 or 3x3 door hinges with removable pins would be just as good, though they may need shiming on one side or the other. Here is a pic of my piano hinge sliding into the s-cleat.
