Ahh my rain pots. These are inspired by Japanese prints, which I LOVE, and have collected avidly for 23 years.
These pots have been more trouble for me to glaze than any pot I make. I keep thinking it is going to be an easy pot to glaze and get good results. Not so.
I have a number of Rain Pot failures sitting about the studio waiting for more attention and another glazing effort.
This is one of four I have made to date that I am happy with. I have more than four that are temporary failures waiting to be reglazed and fired.
I had a bit of good luck with a Rain Pot recently. I just got a companion piece to this one accepted into the 2001 "Feats of Clay" show at the Lincoln Arts Foundation in Lincoln, California. "Feats of Clay" is one of the most important juried contemporary clay shows in the country. And there is a connection to the art pottery movement, in that the show itself is held on the property of the renowned Gladding McBean terra cotta factory, and displayed inside an original 35-foot beehive kiln on the factory site. The pot that is going to be in that show, should you be interested, is a bit nicer and bigger (14h x 8w) and more expensive ($600). It was my intention to keep it, but.... The show opens May 5th. If by chance, any one reading this is interested in that pot and would like a jump on the people in California, they can email or call me and I can provide an email picture. You would have to buy it from Lincoln Arts. I am confident the pot will sell. Actually, I would not mind if it did not sell. I'd like it back.
