Lately, I have had a number of people asking the question, "When?" in regards to any number of things about my pots. Let me tell you how I work during the year so you have some sense of my annual schedule.
Currently, I have a "make/glaze/sell" cycle that is a year long. I find it is much better for me to "make" or to "glaze" for months at a time rather than having a month long cycle where lots of time and experience is lost in the transition of one process to another.
I generally start making pots in October. I continue throwing, handbuilding, or casting until April. In spring, I switch over to glazing. Anywhere from a week to a month will be consumed by the mixing and testing of glazes. By mid-April I am glazing. I start firing the pots whenever I have a load of about 10 to 15 pieces. So in about late May or early June I start posting pots on this website that are "for sale." I will update the website once, maybe twice, before I do my only out-of-town show. Generally I post about 10 pots at a time on the "new pots" page of this site. If I have you on my email list, you will only hear from me when I post new pots for sale. And I e-mail everyone at the same time. The only time you will get an e-mail from me is those half a dozen times a year that I post pots on the site that are "for sale." Of course, I am alway glad to hear from anyone interested in pottery in any regard! I always like to hear from friends.
I only do one out-of-town show a year and that is "Pottery Lovers" up in Zanesville, Ohio in July. If you want to see a lot of my pots, that is the place to see them. I am always in the Red Roof Inn- east of Zanesville- and open my door at 6pm on the Friday before the Pottery Lovers "officially" starts.
I sell most of my yearly production at that show. When I come back in July, I generally take a couple weeks off and then I start glazing pots again. I generally post pots on the website two or three times and then everything is gone until the next spring. So, I really sell a little in June, a lot at Pottery Lovers in July, a little in August and the rest in September.
The best pieces can show up at anytime. There is no rhyme or reason about which pots I sell and when. Last year ('02), many of the best pots didn't get glazed until the very end of my cycle. I was too scared to take 'em on for fear of blowing the glaze. Which frequently happens. However, if they don't turn out like I want, I just glaze and fire them again. They always improve.
Hopefully, you have a sense of when things happen for me. If you have any questions, please send me an email at tim@newartpottery.com. And if you are interested in pots and are passing through St. Louis, you are welcome to stop by. Send me an email!
